The Academic Lecture by Dr. Ibrar Bhatt Queen's University of Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK)

Invited by the School of Foreign Language Education of Jilin University, Dr. Ibrar Bhatt from Queen's University of Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK) gave a special academic lecture in the conference hall of Jilin University's Foreign Language Building on May 5, 2023. The lecture was hosted by Professor Jiang  Feng, the Vice Dean of the school, and attended by our doctoral and master's students, as well as some academic supervisors from other institutions in the province.


Dr. Ibrar Bhatt is  Senior Lecturer at the School of Social Sciences, Education & Social Work at Queen's University Belfast (Northern Ireland, UK) and was Director of the MSc TESOL between 2018-2021. He is also Executive Editor for the top-tier journal Teaching in Higher Education: Critical Perspectives (Taylor& Francis).

The lecture is titled Researching literacy as a 'social practice': An ecological approach. Drawing on theoretical and empirical evidence, Dr. Ibrar Bhatt elaborated on his study on literacy as a social practice (also known as literacy theory). The study views the theory of reading and writing as part of daily social practice, complementing the research in linguistics and discourse analysis.



In the lecture, participants also actively shared their reading and writing experiences in social practice and their unique perspectives. They gained a lot of inspirations and deeper understandings on research methods and the latest progress in reading and writing literacy research from the lecture.
